Mean What You Say – This is NOT Brief

In this tough economic market credibility can go a long way.  It can mean the difference between securing that new client or not.  I think it’s important to follow some basic rules of engagement when marketing to potential clients.  I’ll share a few of these rules in my next few blog posts.  Today’s post is called “Mean What You Say.”  This post was inspired by the following letter received today by one of my clients via email.  I’m pretty sure it’s just spam but it fits my example so I’m sharing it with you.   Contact Info has been changed to protect the privacy of my client and also the dignity of the person who sent this email.

 
Hi John,

I know you place tremendous value on your time so I’ll be brief.

I came across your site, www.yoursite.com, and it was obvious that you’ve poured a lot of time and effort into building your business to where it is today. However, I have also noticed that your internet search positions are very low for some very profitable keywords in Google and the other major search engines. As you most probably know by now, top internet positions are an extremely effective way to help customers who are looking for products / services, like yours, to find you instead of your competitors.

In doing my research, I found and searched several quality keywords (associated with particular locations that may be relavent to you, including Anywhere, USA) in all the major search engines including Google that have good traffic volumes and can bring you more customers. For each of the different key phrases (I only focused on key phrases with good search traffic volumes), I found you ranking outside of the first page. In fact, in most instances, you were nowhere near the first page of Google or any of the other major search engines.

Okay, have you finished reading?  Now let me show you the very first sentence in his letter, just in case you’ve forgotten after all that reading.  The very first line reads “I know you place tremendous value on your time so I’ll be brief.”   Since when is 828 words brief?  This man had a great idea to begin with.  He knew to start his letter with placing value on his potential client’s time, but then he didn’t follow through with that.  This is a huge mistake and if you are making this mistake STOP!  It is a huge turn off to potential clients.  Be brief.  Say it AND mean it.  Had I not been looking for an example piece for my blog post I would not even have taken the time to read this email.  If you have a quality product, market it and the clients will come.  Don’t be deceptive, just say what you mean and mean what you say.  Happy marketing!

Back to School Specials Prove Economical for Small Business

August is back to school month.  As a business you can take advantage of special savings for students that can help keep more of your hard earned money in your pocket.  Here are a few tips and ideas:

  • Buy office supplies during tax holidays this month.  Contact your taxation dept. for dates or click here for a list by state.
  • Electronics stores, membership warehouses and department stores all run computer specials this month.  Snag those new PCs and laptops while they’re on sale
  • Check for online coupon codes to save on shipping and get freebies with your orders from some retailers.  Just google “Coupon Codes”

We are all trying to have less impact on our environment.  Check out these eco-friendly finds:

Ask about laptop alternatives that have less environmental impact and are energy-star compliant
Look for recycled and chlorine-free papers that have less impact on forest depletion and pollute less when being produced
Recycle old CD-RWs and 3.5 in discs at Green Disk

Facebook can use your photos – Privacy Alert

From Facebook’s Privacy Page – “Facebook occasionally pairs advertisements with relevant social actions from a user’s friends to create Facebook Ads. Facebook Ads make advertisements more interesting and more tailored to you and your friends. These respect all privacy rules. You may opt out of appearing in your friends’ Facebook Ads below.”

This means Facebook could use your photos to advertise to your friends.  You can disable this option by taking the following steps:

1. Login to Facebook
2. Click on SETTINGS in the top right corner
3. Select MANAGE for the privacy setting
4. Select NEWSFEEDS AND WALL
5. Select the tab that reads FACEBOOK ADS
6.  In the “Appearance in Facebook Ads” drop down, select NO ONE
7.  Save changes

I had recently noticed some of my friends in ads for dating services and such and didn’t realize why that was happening.  Thank you Lee Drozak of My Office Assistant for letting us know how to disable this feature and protect our images.

Please proof your letter…

This is a letter that I received today.  It is not a joke.  It is a real letter.    It is from a pool contractor we contacted recently.  I will not give the contractor’s name for their privacy and dignity but I will tell you that I am saddened that this is what is coming out of our schools these days.  I will type the letter as it was sent to me and put my commentary in parentheses.  Enjoy!

HELLO RICKY, (My name is Jenifer NOT Ricky and why are you yelling at me?)

WE HAD MEET YOU AT THE NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR, WHERE WE EXHIT OUR POOLS AND TUBS.  (We saw their van and called.  Did not meet them at the fair) 
WE HOPE YOUR ENJOYING YOUR SUMMER.  WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO ENJOY IT A LOT MORE.  JUST IMAGIN YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ON THE HOT SUMMER DAYS COOLING OFF, YOU KIDS WILL HAVE PLENTY TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE A POOL.  VACATION AT HOME SAVES THE COST ON TRAVLING FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.  As a consumer I am unwilling to put my trust in a company that cannot even draft a coherent sentence, especially if that company will be responsible for math computations and electrical and plumbing work on my property.  I am going to correct this letter and send it along with the original and offer my VA services to them.  I hope everyone reading this do your part to make sure that you are representing yourself and your company in the very best and most professional light possible.  Your reputation depends on it!
